Webinar: Ethics for Research in Niue

Webinar: Ethics for Research in Niue

This collaborative webinar with Niue Health explores discussions on creating an ethics framework for research in Niue. Associate Professor Monique Jonas discusses how historical research scandals led to modern protections, highlighting patterns of unchecked researcher power and vulnerable participants. Reverend Dr Matangi introduces a framework based in Christian ethics that views the environment as interconnected with human communities, emphasizing whole-of-life approaches and communal benefit. Ms Gaylene Tasmania, who is the Deputy Secretary of Government to the Office of Secretary to Government Niue, outlines current research application processes and core values for conducting research. The discussions highlighted significant interest in establishing a National Ethics Committee for Niue, with suggestions to examine the Cook Islands’ national ethics committee as a potential model. The webinar concludes that ethical research in Niue must center on Respect, Relationship, and Responsibility.
